Turning data overload into confident decisions

Two Fortune-500-scale US companies — FOX and RIOT — needed custom Tableau dashboards rebuilt from the ground up. Both clients were suffering from the same problem: dashboards that contained all the right data, but were so visually cluttered and informationally dense that stakeholders spent more time navigating charts than acting on insights.

I led dashboard UX design for both clients over 6 months — applying information hierarchy principles, progressive disclosure patterns, and human-centred data visualization to transform how executives and analysts interact with their business data.

Data-rich, insight-poor — a $20-minute-per-session cost

Stakeholders at both organizations were spending 20+ minutes per session trying to extract meaningful insights from legacy dashboards that had been built by data engineers, not designers. The dashboards answered the question "what's the number?" but never "what does this mean, and what should I do about it?"

Visual Clutter

Legacy dashboards used every chart type simultaneously — bar, line, pie, scatter, table — without a clear visual hierarchy guiding the eye to what matters most.

No Entry Point

Users landed on dashboards with no clear "start here" — every metric was weighted equally, leaving analysts to create their own mental prioritization from scratch each time.

Static Views

Lack of interactive filtering meant users either saw too much (all data at once) or too little (a single pre-built view), with no middle ground for ad-hoc exploration.

Context-Free Numbers

KPIs were displayed without targets, trends, or comparisons — a number like "₹4.2M revenue" communicates nothing without knowing the target was ₹5M or last quarter was ₹3.8M.

Three principles that guided every design decision

1. Answer First, Data Second

Every dashboard begins with a KPI summary that answers the most important question immediately — before the user has to scroll or click. Detail is available, but never mandatory.

2. Progressive Disclosure

Summary → Trend → Breakdown → Raw Data. Each layer is accessible through intentional interaction, not displayed all at once. Users choose their depth of analysis.

3. Contextualised Numbers

Every metric is shown with its target, its trend direction, and its period comparison. A number without context is not an insight — it's just noise.

4. Consistent Interaction Grammar

Across both dashboards, identical interactions produce identical results. Filter, drill, export — the same gesture always works the same way, reducing the cognitive overhead of learning a new tool.

From data audit to executive-ready dashboards

Stakeholder Interviews & Priority Mapping

Interviewed 3 stakeholders per client to understand their most common analytical questions and their most frustrating current dashboard moments. Output: a ranked list of 5 "questions this dashboard must answer immediately."

Data Audit & Hierarchy Design

Worked through the full available dataset with the data teams to identify which metrics were truly decision-driving vs. which were interesting but secondary. Built a two-tier metric hierarchy: Primary KPIs and Supporting Metrics.

Layout & Visual Flow

Applied Gestalt principles to dashboard layout — proximity, similarity, and continuity — to create a natural top-left-to-bottom-right reading flow that leads the eye from summary to insight to action.

Chart Type Selection

Matched every metric to the chart type that best communicates its nature — sparklines for trends, bullet charts for target vs. actual, small multiples for comparison. Eliminated decorative charts entirely.

Interaction Design & Filtering

Designed a unified filter bar system allowing users to slice by time period, region, product, and user segment — with filter state always visible in a persistent "current view" indicator so users never lose context.

60% faster insights. 20 minutes given back per session.

Post-launch measurement at both clients showed a 60% improvement in time-to-insight — the time from opening a dashboard to identifying an actionable finding. Average session time dropped by over 20 minutes as users no longer needed to hunt for the information they came for.

The progressive disclosure approach was specifically cited by analysts at both companies as the feature that changed how they use data daily — the ability to get the "answer" in 30 seconds and only go deeper when needed transformed dashboards from a chore into a habit.
